I used to hear people proclaiming themselves to be tolerant much more than I do now. Maybe some of them came around to the fact that saying you’re ‘tolerant’ of someone can come off as condescending. At worst it’s even code for ‘I want you to go away but can’t get rid of you’. More often than not it is/was directed at sexuality or gender identity too. Should anyone ever decide to tell me that they ‘tolerate’ my sexuality, it’s not someone I will perceive to be a compliment. You tolerate an annoying skin condition, not a person.
Perhaps the best and worst thing about young teenagers is that they’re capable of what George W. Bush fans used to call “great moral clarity.”

Created in Illustrator.
You are welcome to print these for your own personal use or to put up in LGBT+ safe spaces/societies/clubs/etc.

Last night, HBO aired Valentine Road, a documentary about the 2008 murder of Lawrence (“Larry”) King, a 15-year-old gay student who asked then-14-year-old Brandon McInerney to be his Valentine. The day after, McInerney brought a gun to school and shot King twice in the head in a computer lab. King died two days later.
